Why the map
lies to us.

Earth is curved; a map is flat. The popular Mercator projection enlarges land masses at high latitudes. Greenland may appear comparable to Africa, even though Africa has roughly 14 times the land area.

We transform each outline with a rigid 3D rotation on a sphere and then redraw it in Mercator coordinates. The country isn't actually growing or shrinking: the projection is changing its appearance.
